A great discovery for active families

A restless Sunday morning was well balanced out when we found this new stretch of cycle paths to explore!

We are always on the look-out for new adventures, especially of the outdoor type, and we were pleasantly surprised to find a new (to us), very family-friendly cycle route in the lower part of Tokai Forest. With small children, (our are 3 and 5), finding suitable routes for their little legs is a bit of a challenge, and we often end up carrying the bikes - or them - half of the way. This circular route gives enough variation to keep them interested, and also offers plenty of distractions through carved-out benches to rest on, river beds to explore and even the occasional climbing structure along the way. The only worry for hot summer days will be the lack of shade, so make sure to take water and sun protection.

The path is suitable for prams, bicycles and even scooters. The area is popular with baboons, so leave the snacks out of sight in the car in order to avoid unpleasant confrontations. We did not encounter any baboons but preferred not to stop for a picnic.

How to get there: Drive along Spaanschemat River Road, past Peddlars on the Bend and Constantia Waldorf School. Another 1/2 kilometer or so, and you will find a parking area on your left hand side, with the red cyclepath going off to your left form the parking area.

Thanks so much for letting us know about the cycle route. Took my kids on Saturday and had a blast!

Only one thing to correct in this article: the driving directions. It is not “another 1/2 km or so” from the Waldorf School. It is 3.2km! I measured.
