Family Markets in Cape Town
We have so many markets in Cape Town, and it might be hard to choose. This week’s Top 10 from Kathryn might help you find a new favourite!
Here at Cape Town Kids, we are really enjoying the ‘Top 10’s that are coming our way from Becoming You. This week, we are taken on a tour of Cape Town’s wide variety of ‘farmers markets’ and get a taste of what they have to offer.
Kathryn Rossiter says” I really enjoy market shopping with kids although you do have to be careful with toddlers in the “exploring” phase like my daughter… trying to keep her in her pram these days is a nightmare! Might have to invest in some “reigns”. Anyway I still find the experience so much less stressful than shopping malls!”
Here’s a pick of those that were new to us on the list:
1. Earth Fair Market takes place in Tokai (in South Palms near Builders Warehouse) on Wednesday afternoons from 3pm – 8pm and on Saturdays from 9am – 2pm. Earth Fair have recently started hosting a market in the City Bowl on Thursdays at the top of St Georges Mall from 11am – 5pm. Fortunately for us the Tokai market is just down the road and we enjoy popping in for an impromptu shop for organic veggies, yummy homemade pies, delicious cheeses and some of the lovely natural beauty products. The kiddies corner is also a winner.
3. Bay Harbour, Hout Bay is a new Cape Town market situated on the water’s edge in the old, authentic part of the Hout Bay Harbour. It comprises more than 100 stalls in an old fish factory, including external tented alleys and courtyards. It opened on 1 July 2011 and trading times are Fridays 5pm – 10pm (in summer), Saturdays 9am – 5pm and Sundays 10am – 4pm (All trading areas are weather-proofed) There are more than 300 parking bays in the immediate vicinity. I love visiting Hout Bay so this will be a perfect excuse for a drive over Constantia Nek. Hout Bay Harbour also offers amazing views of Chapmans Peak! Will be sure to check it out soon. 31 Harbour Road, Hout Bay, phone +27 (0)82 570 5997 or e-mail .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) for more info.
4. Horizon Country Market is held every Saturday from 8am until 2pm at the West Coast Ostrich Farm (off N7 towards Malmesbury). There are delicious fresh foods, pastries, bread, wine, cheese and various handcrafts of good quality on offer. Apparently it is a lovely place also to have a picnic right after buying your goodies. There is plenty of safe space for the kids to run around while you shop and there is a big playground and lots of free parking. 6. City Bowl Market on Hope has become known as the spot “where Cape Foodies meet”. It is open every Saturday 9am – 2pm at 14 Hope Street Gardens – the hall of the old Gardens Synagogue. This indoor venue offers lots of delicious food and a great place to chill on a Saturday. For the kids there is a jungle gym. Products on offer include fresh fruit and veggies, meat, fish, bakery, patisserie, confectionery, dairy, international food, wholesale, coffee, wine and beer.
