New library discovered!
Libraries are special, and it is always worth celebrating when a new one is opened - with great new ideas and resources for the public!
Harare Library opened to the public on the 3rd of June 2011 and is quite unique among public libraries in South Africa.
Funding from the Carnegie Corporation of New York made the building possible, in close partnership with the Violence Prevention through Urban Upgrading (VPUU).
The library features original murals on the library exterior walls and the circulation desk, created by community members and showcasing the wide range of talent within this community.
In addition to its collection of books, CD’s, DVD’s and videos, the library allows users access to the internet and the use of word processing facilities with the free use of 18 public access computers.
Other unique features of this brand new library are:
• A gaming room that features educational computer games and Nintendo Wii consoles
• An Early Childhood development section called Funda Udlale, catering for children 0-6 years and offering an interactive learning and playing space that will help develop essential skills as well as reading skills.
You can read more about Harare Library and all other Cape Town libraries in the latest Library Map published by A&C Maps, available in your local library.
