Don´t Buy a Dog-Adopt One - why adopting a shelter dog is cool
Dog adoption rates in South Africa are astounding. Being less that 10%, this means that only one in every ten dogs sitting on death row get a second chance! It’s for this reason why the country’s famous duo, Joanne Lefson, dog adoption activist and her best friend and most travelled hound, Oscar, has partnered with Pedigree to champion dog adoption in South Africa.
Throughout her life Joanne has been dedicated to the cause of shelter dogs. She explains why adopting a dog is cool…
Everlasting Love: A shelter dog will always remember you for giving it a second chance.
There is a loved one out there for everyone: There are dogs around South Africa that are in shelters. These shelters suite every lifestyle, , there are big dogs, small dogs, fat dogs, thin dogs, funny dogs, hot dogs and even pup-idols. Note that a third of all shelter dogs are purebred, so even if you are looking for a specific breed, you will likely find it at a shelter.
Pound Hounds are Healthy Hounds: Shelters are brimming with happy, healthy hounds who are examined, vaccinated and sterilized before you take it home.
Money Can’t Buy Love: Adopting a dog from a shelter is cheaper than buying one from a pet store or breeder. By adopting a friend, you won’t just be making a difference; you will be part of a change.
Take the Lead! With so many dogs looking for homes, you can take the lead by decreasing the demand for puppies, by choosing an adopted dog instead. Breeding dogs for profit shouldn’t be a career choice.
Be a Top Dog: By adopting a shelter dog, you will prove to all your friends what a great companion a shelter dog can make!
Help the Underdog: Adopting a shelter dog will ultimately free up space for another dog in need of a home.
With these above tips, Joanne pleads to the South African public to remember that owning a dog is a long-term commitment. Furthermore she explains that your adopted friend will require food, water, exercise, veterinarian care, and your attention. So, make sure that the dog you choose fits into your lifestyle and that you have the time to look after your friendly companion. If you don’t find the perfect match at the first shelter you visited, pop into the next one. It will be worth the effort! Life with your adopted dog will be the greatest journey that you will ever take…
