Christmas Festivities

Standing proudly at a height of approximately 12 metres, Cape Town’s tallest Christmas trees and arguably its most beautiful, can be found at the V&A Waterfront’s Flagpole Terrace (near the amphitheatre) and another at its Clock Tower Square. Elegantly decorated and tastefully lit, they provide the perfect place to capture magical memories.

Tyger Valley Ice Rink

Tickets can be bought at Computicket ( for the real ice rink that will cover nearly 400m2 in a marquee area outside Entrance 8 of Tyger Valley Centre. It will also include a Viewing deck for all spectators and an ice bar area. A one-hour skating session will cost just R50 – and that includes the use of a pair of Ice-World fitted skates. If you have your own pair of skates, you’ll only have to pay R30 for a one-hour skating session.

Great family entertainment and holiday programmes are being planned to ensure that this year’s festive season and school holidays are better than ever!  Specially geared for kids - our ‘Ice-Angels’, are constantly on the ice to help beginners or those who need to brush up on their skating skills. We also have unique kids’ skate-aids - guaranteed to get them skating confidently in just one session! Our skating aids (a plastic bobby seal) are also for hire at R20 for a one-hour skating session.

Full-moon picnic with Father Christmas

An early Christmas awaits kids at the last full-moon picnics of the year at the Taalmonument in Paarl on Friday 9 and Saturday 10 December. Parents should bring their children’s gifts to Volksmond Coffee Shop beforehand to be included in Father Christmas’ stocking. Father Christmas should make his appearance by 18.30. To bring more excitement to the evening, visitors are encouraged to dress-up in green or red clothes to ensure a nice Christmas atmosphere. A variety of prizes will be awarded for the best outfits in different age groups. Visitors enjoy the full-moon picnics because of the unbeaten sunset and night time views of the valley. On Friday, the moon will be almost full, with moonrise at 18:59 and sunset at 19:49. The moon will be 100% full on Saturday evening, with sunset at 19:50 and moonrise at 19:51. A guided tour of the monument will be presented at 19:30. The monument will be open until 22:00. Visitors are welcome to bring their own picnic baskets or they can order one from Volksmond Coffee Shop (tel. 021 863 2800 or .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address)). Volksmond will be open until 22:00 for coffee and light refreshments. Entrance fees at the gate are R15 for adults, R10 for students and R5 for children. No booking required. Visitors are reminded to bring a torch and warm clothes. No dogs and fires are allowed. Safe parking is available and access is controlled. Full-moon picnics in 2012 are scheduled for Friday 6 January, Saturday 7 January, Friday 3 February, Saturday 4 February and Friday 9 March. The monument’s operating hours will be extended until 20:00 for the summer season from October to March. Delheim picnics daily by the riverside ‘til April 2012

Enjoy a gourmet picnic on the lawn at the riverside behind the Delheim cellar (mere meters away from where Bessie the cow drank 20 litres of wine: though we don’t suggest a repeat performance by our visitors!)

Best of all, if you bounce out of bed to discover a sunny day, let us know before 10h30 and your basket can still be prepared.

Noddy’s Special Treat

Noddy wins two tickets for a train trip to the seaside, so he can take a friend with him.  Whom should he take?  Everyone wants to be his best friend so that he will choose them to go on the trip.
Come and meet Noddy and his friends Big Ears, Tessie Bear and Martha Monkey.  Naughty goblins, Sly and Gobbo, will be there too, making a nuisance of themselves.  Help to stop Sly and Gobbo’s tricks and play the Listening Game with Noddy.

Baby Play Date

On Friday mornings from 10 am – 12 noon there will be a group for 6 – 12 month olds for Mommies and Daddies and babies to socialize. As we only charge from 10 months old the younger babies and their parents can come in completely for free. The 10 -12 month olds will be charged from R20 – R22 a once-off session (depending on their age).

Oaks Xmas Lights Festival - 9 to 31 December 2011

Open between 18:00 and 23:00, the whole family can enjoy an evening out viewing the Christmas lights, as well as browsing around the market to buy the last minute Xmas gifts and tempt the taste buds with loads of food stalls.
