Butterfly World is not only home to more than 24 species of exotic butterflies, but boasts a variety of birds, marmoset monkeys, and several magnificent iguanas. In addition, there are hair-raising displays of indigenous and exotic spiders and scorpions, housed in locked glass boxes.

They are raised on breeding farms in countries such as Costa Rica, Philippines, Malaysia and China. The pupae are then flown to display parks where the butterflies emerge into their tropical gardens. There’s display boards that outline the life-cycle, and which are dotted with pupae in various stages, and if you’re lucky you get to watch the fascinating process of a butterfly emerging.

Magicians, grand illusions and unbelievable wonders will abound as the Artscape Theatre in Cape Town falls under the alluring spell of the FISM Children’s Magic Spectacular on Saturday 3 March, 2012.

This fantastical show is a highlight of the 2012 South African Championships of Magic, hosted by the College of Magic, Cape Town’s only magical arts organisation. The Championships, held every three years, is a contest in which the most talented performers from around the continent compete for the ultimate honour of representing Africa at FISM, the World Championships of Magic in England in July 2012.

Audience members from three to twelve years old will witness the best that magic has to offer - from intimate sleight-of-hand to spectacular grand illusion performed by top South African artists at the captivating Children’s Magic Spectacular, the ultimate once-off magic and variety show.

The College of Magic, based in Claremont and the only organisation of its kind in the world, has been training children and adults in the marvelous art of magic and illusion for more than 30 years. It recently welcomed dozens of curious young folk to its mysterious Victorian premises for an unbelievable Open Day, featuring entertaining workshops, tours and performances.
