Africa Day with the Lukhanyo Marimba Band

Africa Day with the Lukhanyo Marimba Band

“The Africa in Afrikaans” is the theme of the Afrikaanse Taalmuseum en -monument (ATM)’s celebration of Africa Day on Thursday 25 May 2017. The festivities include live music, guided tours and a special educational programme.

The Lukhanyo Marimba Band from Mbekweni will perform at the Taalmonument on Paarl Mountain from 12:00 to 13:00. Guided tours will be offered to visitors from 08:00 to 16:00. Eighty grade seven learners from Mary Help of Christians Primary School from Paarl will be treated to a special educational programme as part of the ATM’s Sponsor a Bus project.

According to Michael Jonas, Director of the ATM, the celebration will raise awareness about Afrikaans as an African language, its African origins, mutual influences between Afrikaans and other African languages, as well as the diversity of the Afrikaans speaking community. Jonas says it is important to realise that language contact between the Khoi-Khoin and Dutch seafarers from 1595 onwards is seen as the first period in the history of the development Afrikaans.

“The Khoi played an important role in the development of Afrikaans, including early forms such as Khoi-Grensafrikaans. Well-known Khoi loan words include ‘kanna’, ‘boegoe’, ‘dagga’ and ‘kierie’. Afrikaans also includes loan words from other African languages, such as isiXhosa and isiZulu, including ‘impala’, ‘mamba’, ‘pasella’ and ‘indaba’,” says Jonas.

On Africa Day entrance to the Taalmonument is R30 for adults, R10 for South African students and pensioners, R5 for children (free under six years) and free for Drakenstein residents with library cards.
