One of our absolute favourites - for afternoon ambles and tumbles on the endless lawns, or as a starting point for a Sunday hike up the back face of the mountain. If you live in Cape Town and visit Kirstenbosch regularly, a membership of the Botanical Society is a very good idea. There are geese, guinea fowl and squirrels to look at, thousands of plants, trees and flowers with educational information, benches for resting and big lawns for picnicking. Near the restaurant at the main entrance, there is also a sandpit for the little ones to play in while mom and dad enjoy a take-away coffee or a snack. If you are planning a longer walk from Kirstenbosch, make sure to bring a map and to know whether you are doing a round trip or have to be picked up at the end point. Kirstenbosch is also a great place for a picnic, just remember that there are no bins in the park so you must carry everything back out with you! Dogs are not allowed in the developed part of the gardens but can be brought in via Rycroft Gate (Gate3), and taken via the Cut Flower Section up to the 300 m contour path. Dogs must be kept on a leash at all times, and dog walkers must pick up and dispose of their dog’s litter.
